FRANKLIN – The town has received $117,650 in state funds to improve storm water runoff, the state Department of Environmental Protection announced today.

The money will aid the town in "mitigating the effects of polluted storm water," according to a press release..

"Clean lakes and streams mean thriving communities and healthy ecosystems," said Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner David W. Cash.

Franklin received part of $1.42 million state grant to reduce "nonpoint source" water pollution – the pollution caused by rain or snow runoff dragging human pollution into water sources. Unlike pollution from sewage treatment plants or industrial facilities, this type of pollution is unregulated, according to the release.

"These grants will help municipalities, farmers and other stakeholders implement solutions that will directly benefit drinking water sources, aquatic recreational areas and fish stocks that live in these waterways," said Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Maeve Vallely Bartlett
