Foxtel adjusts prices

It's not all bad news. Some Foxtel prices are actually dropping.

Foxtel has announced some minor adjustments to its pricing. Prices will vary for subscribers depending on their packages, with some even enjoying a reduction in monthly fees.

Optus Television has made no changes to its pricing for October.

The biggest increase is in the Get Started basic package to $40, previously $37.95. Most adjust by as little as 5c or drop 95c.

Other price changes are:

My Sports: $16 (was $17.95)
My Movie Network: $16 (was $15.95)
My Showtime: $16 (was $15.95)
My Complete Movies: $29 (was ($28.95)
My Escape: $16 (was $16.95)
My Playtime: $16 (was $16.95)
My World: $16 ($16.95)
Escape / Playtime / World: 2 packages $22 (was $22.95), 3 packages $25 (was $25.95)

Foxtel HD+ Sport: $10 (was $9.95)
Foxtel HD+ Explore: $10 (was $9.95)
HD Complete: $15 (was $14.95)

Platinum package: $106 (was ($105.95)
Platinum HD package: $131 (was $130.95)

Other channels including Disney, Sci Fi, Adults Only, Box Office, Gamesworld plus Multiroom add-ons also see minor adjustments. There is no change to monthly iQ / iQ2 or Foxtel Magazine.

Foxtel is said to be facing further competition from extra channels on Free to Air in 2009 as well as the launch of TiVo.

Smarthouse Australia recently reported that among owners of Foxtel IQ’s the churn rate is over 7% while the overall churn rate is close to 14% -down from close to 20% earlier this year.

It criticised the network for not communicating with the mass consumer technology media, instead preferring to communicate with the Financial Review in a bid to preserving their image with advertising agencies and marketers over customers.

  1. Got sick of the repeats on Foxtel and gave it away years ago. My topfield and Free to Air provides me with all I need these days, especially with new FTA channels coming next year.

If Foxtel want to bring in an access fee of around $15 per month and then a fee for individual channels @ $2 or $3 per channel per month I would look at jumping back on board. But until then my hands will be staying in my pocket.

  2. Well I am now back in love with my IQ!! I couldn’t believe the functions I was so blind to! Apart from now getting extra record time for programmes that run overtime I was able to change the picture settings so the picture fits perfectly on the screen! Would you believe I was watching TV with the picture off centre for over a year now… I thought there was something wrong with my TV!! So so happy… Thanks Chris & Kathy!!

  3. Murray… in addition to the information Christopher has given, iif you select the ‘setup’ button then go to option 4, system setup you can also specify the time to start and finish through the Custom record and link function (option 7). This is very handy as some shows do start later than 10 minutes…

  4. I tells ya, I got a Tivo the other day and I love it!

There’s enough interesting stuff out there on repeats late at night (on Seven, Ten and ABC) that is more worthy than paying ridiculous amounts on pay tv.

And the good thing is – I just record it and don’t have to worry if it’s on at a ridiculous time – I can watch it whenever I want.

    Tivo rules!

  5. Yes folks, we ARE being blatantly ripped off just because we, as discerning and avid tv viewers want to have more of a choice than 4 channels…if they provided a bit better content, i wouldn’t mind -i think they believe themselves to be the ‘Masters of deception’ the way they constantly repackage and recycle/ reshuffle shows around with little concern for the viewers….in any case, it is still better than the alternative – network only

  6. Why do foxtel think they can keep increaseing their prices every 3-6 months by more than CPI ?? With the economy going funny and people struggling to pay mortgages I think youll be seeing the churn rate incrase with more people dumping it totally or at least dropping to the basic packages.

  7. Christopher – GET OUT ARE YOU SERIOUS?!! I had no idea I could do that, all this time of being frustrated and thinking there was no solution! Thanks a bundle -I will report back tomorrow after taking a look at it tonight! Although from memory I didn’t think IQ had a settings function… Although to be honest I hadn’t really checked! Thanks for the tip Chris…

  8. Murray, go into your iQ settings, you can set it to record up to 10 minutes before and after the time a show is scheduled. A pretty basic feature of probably every DVR on the market.

  9. The most frustrating thing with IQ is that when you record a programme on free to air TV it never records the whole show. I know this is in large part due to 7, 9 & 10 running overtime but honestly you would think the system would allow you a function to record say 5 or 10 minutes overtime to combat this problem. Instead you have to record the following programme in your planner as a safeguard and this often conflicts with other programmes you have recording… In addition to it wasting unnecessary space! I find it SO annoying and there has been many times I have been watching a programme and it cuts out from recording – JUST AT THE BEST BIT! ARGH!! Does anyone know if they are working on fixing this??

  10. What about austar? us country folk need a break! Come on give us a break. Or how about a hat or something? i’ve been a foxtel and austar subscribber for over 12 years and i’ve never gotten a present from them except the monthly bill!

Can’t you put in a word David? I only want a free hat i’ve paid for it over 12 years!

  11. great the only package you are required to have just went up…. i am definitely not getting foxtel now…. was planning to if they dropped the get started pack below $35 pm…. BRING ON FREEVIEW!!! I love my topfield!

  12. Of course the biggest increase is in the ‘get started basic’…it’s the one that EVERYONE”S got!!!!! Once again, an increase to watch MORE repeated/ recycled shows…thanks Foxtel
