Brown Friday: Ferguson Protestors Shut Down Oakland BART

Dozens of demonstrators opposed to a Ferguson, Missouri’s non-indictment of police officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of Michael Brown disrupted public transit in Oakland on Friday, shutting down the West Oakland BART station and slowing traffic to and from the city on the Bay Area’s subway and elevated train line.

While dozens of activists chained themselves through open doors on rail cars, over 100 protestors stood outside the station, the San Francisco Chronicle and local observers reported. Commuters, shoppers and tourists were stranded. Oakland has been the site of the most vociferous–and violent–Ferguson protests in California.

After a “Thanksgiving truce” on Thursday, which slowed Ferguson protests in the Bay Area and nationwide, demonstrations began anew, signaling that activists intend to carry on their campaign through the winter–at least where the weather remains warm enough to draw large enough crowds of activists to make an impact.

Elsewhere in California, animal rights activists planned to protest against fur on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, hoping to make the most of the Black Friday shopping rush to gain attention for their cause.
