PAONIA – The No. 1-seeded Paonia Eagles have won the 2A state title for the second year in a row.  The Eagles defeated the No. 2-seeded Buena Vista Demons in the championship match on Saturday, Nov. 2014 at Paonia High School.

Paonia dominated the Demons early on, with a 14-0 lead that lasted until the fourth quarter.

On the first possession of the game, Paonia’s Gunnar Chesnik took down Buena Vista QB Keegan Wentz in the backfield for a turnover on downs.  Paonia score on a Jeremiah Hillman TD from 2-yard out.  Paonia’s second score came from a 62-yard TD pass from Taylor Walters to Logan Shoppe.

The second and third quarters were pretty inactive as far as scoring goes.

In the fourth quarter, Walters scored another TD from 2-yards out for Paonia.  But in the fourth, something else happened as well: the Demons kind of came alive.  Wentz threw a 10-yard TD pass to Trevor Close to finally get BV on the board, now trailing the Eagles 21-7.

The Eagles won the 1A state title with a final score of 21-7 over Buena Vista.  In Paonia head coach Brent McRae’s second year coaching, he claims his second title with the team.
