LONGMONT – The No. 7-seeded Longmont Trojans advanced to the 2014 Class 4A state championship match with a 21-14 win over the No. 11-seeded Broomfield Eagles in the semifinals on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2014 at Everly-Montgomery Field.
Broomfield opened the game with a 6-yard TD run from QB Logan McCormick, giving the Eagles an early 7-0 lead over Longmont. But Longmont answered back with a TD of its own, but missed the 2-point PAT. Broomfield led Longmont going into the second quarter 7-6.
The Trojans were able to get a last-second TD with forty-nine seconds left in the first half, stealing the lead away from Broomfield. A Clint Sigg-to-Eli Sullivan 17-yard TD pass, and 2-point conversion brought the halftime score to Longmont 14, Broomfield 7.
Longmont pulled even further ahead of Broomfield in the fourth quarter with another Clint Sigg TD, running for 10-yards. Longmont’s Ryan Rulon later ended a Broomfield possession with an interception – Broomfield’s third fourth quarter turnover. And then Longmont fumbled right back.
Things got a little more interesting when Broomfield’s Dante Panicucci caught a 21-yard TD pass to cut Longmont’s lead 21-14 with 1:11 left in the game. Close game, but Longmont ended up taking this victory with a final score of 21-14 over Broomfield.
Longmont plays No. 1-seeded Pine Creek for the 4A state title on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2014 at 11 am at Mile High.
