Jefferson gets Army All-American invite

Ravenwood wide receiver Van Jefferson has been piling up the accolades since transferring to Middle Tennessee from St. Mary’s Preparatory School in Orchard Lake, Mich., prior to last season.

Jefferson, a four-star recruit according to 247Sports, earned all-Midstate honors for the Raptors in 2013, and was tabbed No. 3 on The Tennessean’s Dandy Dozen prior to this season.

The 6-foot-2, 175-pound senior, who committed to Georgia in August, will receive another top honor next week, when he’s formally invited to participate in the 2015 U.S. Army All-American Bowl, joining Ensworth defensive back Rico McGraw, who has also been selected to the 90-player field.

”It’s a great honor,” Jefferson said. “I’ve been wanting to play in that game for a long time, you know watching it on TV. I’m excited for the opportunity, but at the same time, I still want to go out there and compete. I can’t wait for it.”

The 2015 U.S. Army All-American Bowl Selection Tour will visit Ravenwood High School on Wednesday to formally select Jefferson. The event is set for 2:35 p.m.

“It’s a huge honor for Van,” Ravenwood head coach Will Hester said. “There are only so many guys around the entire country that get selected for that honor.”

Jefferson, the son of former NFL wide receiver and current Tennessee Titans receivers coach Shawn Jefferson, has caught 24 passes for 330 yards and five touchdowns on the year, including last week’s six-catch, 128-yard performance in the Raptors’ 44-13 win against Overton.

“Obviously he’s a phenomenal player, but he’s also helped raise the level of competitiveness for the entire team,” Hester said. “Everybody knows the accolades that he gets and everything, so all of our players in practice want to get a piece of him and prove that they’re just as good as he is.”

He totaled 87 catches for 1,251 yards and 14 touchdowns a season ago, helping lead Ravenwood to a 10-2 record and the second round of the Class 6A playoffs.

Jefferson’s selection marks the second Raptors player selected to an All-American game in as many seasons. Last season, Ravenwood’s Wesley Horky – now the starting long snapper for the Oklahoma Sooners – was invited to the Under Armour All-American game.

Back to back years we’ve had a kid play in an All-American game, so that’s pretty exciting for us,” Hester added.

The 2015 U.S. Army All-American Bowl, played at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, will be broadcast live on NBC on Jan. 3, 2015.
