The defending champions Purefoods Star Hotshots weathered a spirited comeback by the Alaska Aces to escape with a 96-89 win and sweep their best-of-three quarterfinals series in the 40th PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Araneta Coliseum.

Wrapping up the series, 2-0, the Hotshots will next play the Talk “N Text Tropang Texters in a best-of-five semifinal series.

Import Denzel Bowles led Purefoods with 32 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots.

The Hotshots erected leads of as many as 20 points in the fourth quarter but the Aces mounted a huge fightback and moved within 84-88 in the dying seconds.

Purefoods found a way to survive with Marc Pingris, Mark Barroca and Alex Mallari delivering the game-sealing points.
