This photo was taken on a recent trip to the Banco Chinchorro reserve in Mexico. It is a mangrove covered atol located about two hours off shore by boat from the Mexican mainland. Only a few fishermen live there in rudimentary conditions during fishing season. There is also a scientific base working all year-round in order to study the atoll's ecosystems. It is one of if not the only place where you can get in the water face to face with american crocodiles without a cageTime
This was taken at around midday / early afternoonLighting
The sun was strong, the water was clear and we were close to the surface so I shot straight from the camera without any strobesEquipment
This is shot on a Sony rx100 mk2 in a nauticam underwater housing and uwl04 dome wet lensInspiration
I have spent a lot of time in the water photographing sharks but was amazed to find out I could get this close to a 3/4 meter croc!. I booked the trip straight away and was really exited to get the opportunity to do itEditing
I took a few grains of sediment and a couple of large bubbles that were reflecting the sunlight in a strange way out with the spot healing brush in Photoshop. I also tweaked the clarity and contrast slightlyIn my camera bag
On that trip just my Sony rx100 mk2 and the housing. I have recently purchased a canon 5d mk3 but it will be a long time before I can afford the housing to be able to take that underwaterFeedback
To be honest, to catch a picture like this it's more about where you go and not what you know. As mentioned the conditions were great, shallow clear water and lots of light. I shot in shutter priority burst mode after working out the correct ISO for the conditions. I also used Center spot focussing and a fish eye lens
