IT pros and young computer science grads can pretty much pick their job in Metro Detroit, Daniel Duggan of Crain's hears at a Plymouth event hosted by the Michigan Council of Women in Technology.

General Motors plans to hire another 400 IT workers this year, another 250 could land at Ford and an undisclosed, yet smaller amount at Chrysler Group. ...

"We are meeting demand now, but will we be meeting our demand in four or five years?" said Nick Smither, chief information officer at Ford. ...

Chrysler's IT chief, Scott Sandschafer, spoke of recruiting programmers and designers with career experience

That means currently employed auto IT professionals, he said. And when the moderator of the session used the word "poaching," there was an immediate and awkward reaction from all three CIOs.

Karennen Terrell of Wal-Mart was one of two speakers indicating she's eager to poach from auto firms, Duggan writes.

"The automotive business is a great place to be from. And, by the way, I'm the only Karennen on LinkedIn,” she quipped, insinuating . . . that she's interested in hearing from potential IT workers.
