Seven passengers were reported injured when an MBTA bus crashed through a barrier over the Massachusetts Turnpike in Newton at about 7:30 a.m. Sunday morning, according to Newton Fire Lt. Eric Fricke.

The front end of the bus could be seen hanging over the turnpike near Exit 17 as emergency responders worked to treat the injured passengers.

Four passengers went to St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in Brighton and three more were transported to Newton-Wellesley Hospital, Fricke said. All of the injuries were non-life-threatening. One of the injured was the bus driver.

The bus was on the Washington Street overpass at the time of the crash. Emergency responders secured the bus with heavy rope and chained it to a ladder truck. Workers climbed into the bus to cut free sections of guard rail that were preventing the bus from being towed back up onto Washington Street.

The westbound on ramp was closed to traffic and one lane on Route 90 below was closed.

Traffic on Newton's Washington Street and on the Newton Corner roundabout was slow on Sunday morning.

"If you can avoid the area, avoid it," said Newton Police spokesman Lt. Bruce Apotheker.
