Thread of obscure games you don't think anyone else has played

Why would you do that? said:

I played the shit out of this as a kid.

I can't remember the name, but there was this game on the SNES (I think) where you played as a kid Frankenstein. Anyone care to help me with a name.

So;

Who killed the obscure games?

Was it the internet?

Or the consumers?

Or the gaming industry itself???

Nowdays is almost impossible for a new game to not be completely scavenged before release.

Worst, most games follow a set pattern created by the best sellers, meaning 95% of new games are devoid of any creativity or personal vision from the authors

(Authors? Can we say this word when talking about videogames?)

I'm not 100% sure what you're saying really. What do you mean by "killed". And "scavenged before release"?

I think there are plenty of good obscure games even today, but being that we all post on Neogaf, odds are, we're going to know about them.

Alright it's my turn:

1j20yv.jpg

Fortified Zone for the Game Boy - I have no idea what this game was beyond a top-down Contra clone, but I still thought it was cool as hell at the time.

20rlgl3.jpg

Tuff E Nuff for the Super NES - In retrospect, a pretty shitty fighting game, but it still did an amazing job of catching your attention. You could even rewind the replays.

wsjpkw.jpg

The Adventures of Batman and Robin for the SNES - whenever I find someone who has played this it's usually either the Genesis version or the Sega CD version, but never the SNES version. Nothing against the others, but the SNES game was a textbook example of how to make a good game based on a TV series.

The levels were formatted just like episodes of the show. You also did a lot more than just the brawler combat of Konami's other Batman games of the period. A fair amount of platforming and puzzles solving helped this game capture the spirit of Batman better than most others.

1qsnt0.jpg

The Flintstones: The Treasure of Sierra Madrock for the SNES - Sort of a mashup between Super Mario World and competitive tabletop gaming. It was one of those games you could easily spend hours playing.

9bhe1k.jpg

Metal Warriors for the SNES - An anime-style side-scrolling mech game developed by LucasArts (but published by Konami). Apparently this was a western homage to NCS's Assault Suits series (known in the US as Target Earth and Cybernator).

An added perk of this game however was that you could actually get out of your mech and walk around on-foot, adding an extra sense of scale to the game. It even had a one-on-one versus mode.

10z9qaf.jpg

Darius Twin for the SNES - Probably my most played shmup overall. Overall just a really solid space shooter with alternate paths available and some kickin' music.

ifsyh4.jpg

Red Alarm for the Virtual Boy - I don't care what you have to say about the Virtual Boy in general, but this was definitely one of the few good games for the system. Sort of a Star Fox clone but all wireframe. The wireframe graphics meshed really well with overall feel of the Virtual Boy system. Also had great music.

2hf776r.jpg

James Bond 007 for the Game Boy - Vastly underrated Bond game. This one was an adventure game from Nintendo for a change. Very similar to Zelda Link's Awakening. That focus allowed it to capture a lot of contextual elements of what Bond does better than any of the shooters did.

Instead of capping endless hordes of dudes you had to negotiate, navigate black markets, play black jack, and actually think your way out of problems. Y'know, suave stuff more befitting Bond.

20k2af6.jpg

Panic Park the Arcade Game - All I'll say is that if you play long enough, you WILL lose friends over this game.

10degl0.jpg

Crush for the PSP - Most underrated game of this goddamn hardware generation if you ask me. A brilliant puzzle game where you navigated environments switching between 2D and 3D. Tons of levels, and one of the smoothest difficulty curves I've ever seen.

It's $10 on PSN, if you own a PSP, go grab it, NOW.

Yeah man, excellent game. I played the hell out of it and its where I learnt to play Baccarat (as a child mind you :lol). The final level was a drainer though.

Are you as old as I am or just a retro game master? :D

I don't remember a related coin-op tho, I imagine it was an arcade port since it's by Sega, I only plyed the C-64 version.

But damn you nailed it so fast, I guess it's not that obscure of a game then? :p

It's a locked game on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection for Ps3/Xbox 360.

A cyberpunk hybrid of both rail shooter and third-person adventuring/puzzle-solving with awesome (for the time) CGI and kickass music. I guess if the first one sold a million it's not that obscure but I'm kind of skeptical of that number. I thought the idea of the world and the story was pretty awesome as a kid and the rail shooting was fun, even if I now realize the walking-around parts were frustrating trial-and-error gameplay. The first game had a decent enough story and gameplay, but the second (which I picked up for $1.88 in the CompUSA bargain bin in many years ago; still have it, box and all) was marred by horrible dialogue, a lame story and some of the worst puzzles ever (one of the door codes is literally a Simon Says puzzle). Still, it makes me wish there were more cyberpunk games, and I kind of like the IP.

Another thing: I first discovered the game on an OEM demo CD called "Cyberia: Mission Norway" and hidden on the CD was a short-story explaining the backstory of the characters and the world; I remember it being really well-written and made me want to get the whole game. Unfortunately, that short story was not on the full-game's CD, and I've long lost the demo CD so it may be lost to time. I thought it was odd that they would go to the trouble to write out this detailed short story but hide it away on the without any indication it was there unless you were poking around the CD and found it yourself, and then only include it on the demo CD.

When my family rented an SNES when I was younger (remember when you could do that?) this was the game we chose. It blew my young mind away.

I played it again several years back and I couldn't get back into it. I dunno, I should give it another shot.

SwordsandSerpents.jpg

Pretty decent first person dungeon crawler for the NES.

183-1.jpg

I don't know how obscure any game on a modern DD service is, but this is pretty fun adventure game.

And probably the most obscure game I own, since it was never released in the US:
562778_7507_front.jpg

Lolo fans, you owe it to yourself to try this out. It has some of the most brilliantly twisted puzzles you've ever seen, from complex actions that cover half the map and require literally split second timing to monster doors that go 4 or 5 levels deep before you get them in the right spot. At one point the only way to get past a Don Medusa is by hiding behind another Don Medusa! It will cost you quite a bit for a game boy game, but it's worth it.

Fake Edit:
lyle2a.png

This is from a freeware title called Lyle in Cube Sector. It's pretty much a combination of Metroid and Super Mario 2 USA and it's as awesome as that sounds. A must for any fan of Metroidvanias.

Gorgon, you have great taste and all, but...c'mon.

Would it be that much to ask people to post why they liked some of the games in question, instead of just dumping a ton of boxarts?

;_;

I just couldn't resiste posting my faves from the past. Let this nostalgic man indulge in his recollections, please.

Plus, there's a shit ton of people even on GAF who never played many of these or even heard about them. This is a nice way to get their interest peaked in cheking some of these gems. And I think it's cool for some people to remember some of them after all these years. Or are you so delusional that you are convinced even 5% of GAF played something like The Immortal? You'd be surprised.

Current gen only, since people seem to think that the current gen niche game no longer exists:

cboxaxelpixel.jpg

A puzzle-adventure game about a man and his dog with a sort of cut-out / pastiche Monty Python art style.

cboxlazyraiders.jpg

Use the controller to tilt, rotate, or flip levels and navigate your character through a Spelunker-style maze to get keys to unlock doors and find treasure. Extensive leaderboards and time attack / score attack options.

cboxroogoo.jpg

A twitch reflex puzzler; rotate the discs to make sure the falling symbols get through. Manic at the later stages. Cute presentation.

cboxschizoid.jpg

One part Ikaruga meets one part Snake. Oh, yeah, and you play as two different ships; one with each hand.

cboxhailtothechimp.jpg

Kinda like Power Stone or another arena top-down brawler, wrapped in a presentation that's involves electoral subterfuge in the animal kingdom, fake news broadcasts, etc.

14440.jpg

Katamari meets Nickelodeon cartoon art style.

bonsai-barber-20090327110249341-000.jpg

(Bonsai Barber, WiiWare)

Every day, give five haircuts to fruit and vegetables. It's cool, because every day you only play for 15 minutes, but there's enough content to keep you coming back for a year; 64 haircut types, 15 or so different customers, an in-game achievement system, etc.

8f0a5726d6fcfb7730c483de8c5661ba.jpg

Paper Mario / echochrome style game that focuses on collapsing a 3d world into 2d puzzle mechanics. Very hard.

afrika-release-on-ps3-will-take-you-on-a-wild-ride12.jpg

Dumb Nintendo fans keep clamoring for Pokemon Snap, but this is a hundred times the game Pokemon Snap was, particularly if you have an interest in photography. Extensive in-game photo options.

cursed-mountain.jpg

Not a particularly good atmospheric survival horror game. Ugly, lame controls, kinda low budget.

deadlycreatures.jpg

A very competent God of War / DMC-styled action brawler. Where you play as a scorpion or a tarantula.

Ghost-Squad-US.jpg

Best light gun shooter I've ever played, love the RPG-style level up unlock system.

lets_tap_box_art_24878.jpg

future tapping game

The%20Munchables.jpg

Katamari as a 2.5d game. Not based on Lunchables.

opoonaboxlg.jpg

xC1c3lW.jpg

ORDER%20UP%20WII.jpg

Half-way between Cooking Mama and Root Beer Tapper. Final stage is an awesome Iron Chef parody. Comes with a chef's hat.

617oCY0WqDL.jpg

I love trivia games. This is no exception.

DS really has enough for its own post, so I'll just leave with those four consoles.

The basic idea of the game was great though. I whish more devs would pick up on some great settings for survival games. This particular game did suck though, from what I've seen at friends' houses and online reviews/comments.

Heck, even the idea of "survival game" seems to mean nothing more but trying to survive the horrible game controls themselves while conserving ammo wandering through corridors.

Well, at least they're delivering stuff like Stalker and The Witcher, which is far more interesting than the crap Bioware, Bethesda and the likes put out by a mile.

EvilMario

Will QA for food.
Deadly Creatures, Cursed Mountain, and licensed games like the Flintstones? Come on guys, I think a few people have played and heard of these.

Spanky's Quest; it's sort of a platformer puzzle title involving a monkey that blows bubbles that explode into various sports balls to defeat animated fruit. I loved this game as a kid, and it's fun to this day. :D

edit: Added a new entry for this with more pictures / description.

Cocoron - Not that obscure, but don't see it mentioned as much as it should. 2-D side scroller where you make can make your own character (Head, Body, Weapon) which have different weight, jump, and life mechanics. Great game with cool level designs.

My buddy and I just played this the other day. Crazy cool game. Weird ass character though, that I'm sure you're aware of!

633445-bujingai_cover_large.jpg

It's a stylish action game like Devil May Cry. I gotta admit, the combat is kind of fun but the level design is boring as hell since it's pretty much the exact same thing each area.

Also, if you think there's too much Gackt in Japanese games today, do not play this.

Lost Fragment

I pimp this game whenever I get the chance, because it's a game that's gone underappreciated in the midst of LucasArts' other classic games.

Pretty much a Sim City 2000 clone, except instead of a city, you're in charge of building Heaven and Hell. The game itself is bad, but what makes it worth enduring is the game's humor and atmosphere. Especially in the building descriptions and the music. Definitely has that old school LucasArts charm.

But yeah, the gameplay is what killed this game back in the day I think. It's not so bad until you start to get your Heaven and Hell up to a big size, but at that point, the amount of micromanagement required to keep everything stable is truly ridiculous.

But if you're a fan of old school LucasArts games and have never played this one, you'd be doing yourself a favor to check it out.
