Russian Orthodox spokesman rips US approach to Syria, warns Christians will suffer

August 27, 2013

A spokesman for the Russian Orthodox Church has blasted the United States for a “completely one-sided” approach to Syria, and warned against American intervention in that country’s civil war.

“Once again, as was the case in Iraq, the US is acting as an international executioner,” Metropolitan Hilarion, who heads the external-relations department of the Moscow Patriarchate, told the AsiaNews service. “Once again thousands of lives will be sacrificed on the altar of an imaginary democracy.”

Metropolitan Hilarion said that Syrian Christians, in particular, could become “hostages to the situation and the main victims of radical extremist forces who, with the help of the United States, will come to power.”

Obama's resolve to help Islamist thugs come what may (see this morning's NYT lead story) strengthens the right-wing notion that he is in fact a Muslim. I always thought this kind of talk was crazy, but I am not sure any longer. As St Paul once said, you will know them by their actions rather than their words.

Sam Zakham, ambassador to Bahrain under President Reagan, said this morning that what Obama is considering is sheer idiocy. He said "by intention or design," attacking Syria would put the US in the position of helping al-Queda. Ambassador Zakham has huge credibility. He was born in Lebanon who came to the US at age 14. He also is a practicing Christian who knows the Middle East like the back of his hand. People should pay attention to Sam Zakham, for his words are wisdom indeed.
