ANYONE can pitch any business idea at this year’s Startup Weekend Cebu on June 5 to 7.

The 5th startup event in Cebu since its launching in 2012, this year’s event is general-themed.

Any idea can be pitched – from food to health to engineering to technology applications, said Ashley Uy, one of four organizers for the event. The other organizers are Timmy de Jesus, Rachel Eilbott and Eddie Ybañez.

Ideas tend to be very varied and diverse, even if a lot are for applications, platforms or websites, said de Jesus.

“The point of Startup Weekend is to really test a concept. You can launch a startup, and many people actually do so from the weekend,” Eilbott said.

In previous events, students as young as 17 as well as seasoned entrepreneurs, developers or designers as old as 40 participated. Participants need not have  launched something beforehand.

Participants will pitch their ideas on June 5, from which the most popular ones will be voted on. Participants with the most votes can then pick their team.

Throughout the weekend, teams have to make the minimum viable product out of the pitched idea and present it to a panel of judges at the end of the event.

De Jesus said GFDI will be offering the top 10 teams free entrance to their pre-accelerator program.

Startup Weekend will be held at the University of the Philippines Cebu.
