Jimmy Carter has joined with much of the Republican establishment in expressing preference for Donald Trump over Ted Cruz because Trump will make deals.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports:
Turning to the “almost completely unpredictable” race for the Republican nomination, Carter said he had a “feeling” that Trump’s chances ultimately would “fade away.
“When people actually get ready to put on a ballot, ‘This is the person I want to lead me for the next four or eight years, I think they’ll have a little different opinion,’” Carter said.
Still, better him than Ted Cruz.
If he had to choose between Cruz and Trump for the Republican nomination, Carter chuckled, “I think I would choose Trump, which may surprise some of you.”
(It did, judging by the loud laughter from the audience.)
“The reason is, Trump has proven already he’s completly malleable,” Carter explained. “I don’t think he has any fixed (positions) he’d go the White House and fight for. On the other hand, Ted Cruz is not malleable. He has far right wing policies he’d pursue if he became president.”
I suppose that this is the point at which I’m supposed to say something witty.

Based on Ted Cruz’s Senate career he’s right.
It was full of stunts designed to kill deals.
It’s not 2000 anymore. This time is different. Once upon a time gridlock was acceptable, but this time it’s not. Baseline spending is way up. Obamacare is a bomb that will destroy American health care. Republican consensus on allowing legal immigration but disapproving of illegal immigration is gone forever (Obama rendered the consensus absurd by legalizing everybody with the swipe of a pen)

Making deals with them isn’t going to stop them.
Cruz is a man of character. There was absolutely no practical reason for him to go against ethanol subsidies. He did. And he still won Iowa. That speaks to his integrity.
Some “stunts designed to kill deals” are pretty smart:
Killing deals that would grant amnesty to millions of people illegally present in the U.S.
Killing deals that would restrict the political speech rights of American citizens.
Killing deals that would increase federal control of our right to keep and bear arms.
Killing deals (trying to anyway) that have cost people their health coverage and even their jobs.
Killing deals that would have armed “rebels” in Syria when we cannot tell whether they are rebels against Assad or jihadis working to overthrow Assad to further the Islamic State.
Senator Cruz’s “stunts” have been very good for America.

Trump is a negotiator, true. But not “malleable”….he knows how to walk away from a bad deal.
And what he considers a bad deal is completely dependent on what will gain him the most popularity.
The only bad deals that Trump has walked away from were bankruptcies. They were caused by his bad decisions. Carter is correct when he says Trump has no core values. Think back to the insulting things he has said about ALL of the Republican contenders and tell me that this is a man you would like to see in the WH. Ben Carson is a pedophile. Fiorina is ugly. Jeb Bush is a loser and low energy. Kasich would be a failure if not for Ohio”s oil money. Cruz is a liar. In our country’s founding days of duels, this fool would have had to be a damn good shot or a great swordsman to stay alive with his big mouth. We can only imagine what trouble he would cause our nation if elected.
It is comments like this that make me wonder if Jimmy Carter lusts after Caitlyn Jenner in his heart because she says she is a Republican.

I keep saying it. Trump is real estate. Real estate is connected to politics. Trump is a mercenary in the sense that he has dealt with both sides of the aisle.
Can he make deals? Sure. Can he use the laws to his advantage? Obviously. Does he covet his neighbor’s home and wife? Well sometimes clearly he does.
Do I trust him to keep his word once he is in office? On some issues yes. On some no. And he’s a New Yorker. He would have been better off working for one of his father’s contractors growing up. I and my children were better for it.
But we are talking about the word of a guy who saw a UFO and shared the Peace Prize with the bloodiest terrorist around and still supports them despite the obvious blood on their hands. And who is widely regarded as one of the worst presidents in history. He’s the gold standard for feckless and bad. Only Clinton surpasses him in moral turpitude.
Trump’s got his faults but don’t judge him by a Carter endorsement even if it is backhanded.

He says the election process in Venezuela is the best in the world. The correct position is that as with all communist governments until they collapse of their own dead weight, the election is rigged to deny a real opposition any chance to win.

I would imagine the landscape is littered with people who thought that Trump would be “malleable”.
But what have we seen so far in this election? Has the press found Trump malleable? How about the RNC? Well, ahh, no and no. Well, maybe he’s not all that malleable, after all.
I have no problem with deals, so long as they’re good deals for the United States. “Good” just means that the Progressive Axis doesn’t win every goddamn time. However, if you think that the word “deal” is a synonym for “surrender”, then deals are obviously not so good. But not even Jimmah is enough of a crock to try to claim that Trump is a quy who’s notoriously quick to surrender.
Perhaps what Carter means by “malleable” is that Trump, not being a slave to any easily identifiable doctrine, is unpredictable. In that case, maybe the drooling old peanut is right.

Cruz definitely has far more solid conservative policies. However, I think they believe they can win against Cruz but are extremely worried about Trump. Trump gets a lot of crossover; Cruz does not. There is nothing the Left wants more than the presidency. I’m not at all convinced this isn’t a total subterfuge. Carter knows endorsing Trump hurts him.
They are more afraid of Trump than Cruz and yes, unpredictability has a lot to do with it.

I don’t need anybody to “lead” me for the next four or eight years, and I don’t choose a president on that basis. The president is a civil servant, an employee of We, The People. The president’s job is to run the executive branch of the federal government, not to “rule” over us peasants. It is a sad commentary on the times we live in that people like Carter and Obama still don’t understand that.
Unfortunately, that type of thinking is in the minority. I’ve come to the conclusion over the years that most people DO want to be ruled. It seems a very large segment of our population is more than happy to turn their own responsibilities over to others.
