The battle for supremacy begins as the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) meet unfolds today at the newly built Naga City Sports Complex in southern Cebu.

It will be the first that the City of Naga will be hosting the major multi-sporting event, which will showcase at least 10,000 athletes.

Elementary and secondary athletes coming from 12 division in Central Visayas will try to deliver the goods for their respective teams in the week-long competition.

The meet will have 17 sporting events.

Most of the events will be held at the Naga City Sports Complex and will boast of its newly constructed 400-meter rubberized track oval.

Outside Cebu City, the track oval is the only one to have eight lanes.

The city government of Naga allocated P8 million for the conduct of the meet.

However, the city’s Olympic-sized swimming pool located at the baywalk area will be unavailable as construction remains on going.

With this, the swimming competition will still be held at the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC.

The swimming pool at CCSC was also used last year when the event was hosted by Balamban town.

“Hosting this prestigious event is a great honor and pleasure on our part as this will showcase Naga, not only as an industrial hub but also its potential to be the next sports tourism destination in Cebu,” said City of Naga Mayor Valdemar Chiong.

Chiong also assured that the participants will be taken cared of.

He said there will be on-standby teams from the Philippine National Police, medical, emergency and rescue teams.

Personnel from the  City Hall will also be on hand to attend to everyone’s needs.

The municipality of Minglanilla will also host two sporting events.

Gymnastics event will be held at the Minglanilla Gymnasium, while the softball competition will be held at the Minglanilla track oval.

The opening ceremonies will kick off at 3:30 p.m. at the Naga City Sports Complex.
