The Harris Barn in Ladner will again serve as the venue for the Seedy Saturday and Garden Expo.
Ladner’s Seedy Saturday and Garden Expo will mark its fifth annual edition later this month at Harris Barn.

The Ladner Community Garden is presenting the event and partnering with the Corporation of Delta again this year.

Delta will be putting together a children’s gardening activity this time around, says organizer and past president for the Ladner Community Garden Kristin Crouch.

“We want it to be a whole family event,” she says.

Seedy Saturday also includes guest speakers, a seed swap and vendors.

People are encouraged to bring their seeds between 10 and 10:30 a.m. and drop them off. The seeds will be sorted and then trading will get started at 10:30 a.m.

“It was very busy for seed trading last year. It was probably our busiest year,” says Crouch, who plans on bringing cucamelon seeds this time.

She wrote about the “unique and tasty fruit” in her blog (which appears on the Optimist website) and described it as “a cucumber that has hint of lime to it” that is harvested when it’s about the size of a grape.

This year’s expo has shifted back to a one-day event after taking place over two days last year. Crouch says it’s a bit of a stretch for volunteers to do two days and that while over 600 people visited the first day, it wasn’t as busy on the second.

Vendors will have plants, seeds and garden accessories for sale on the ground floor of the barn. Crouch notes there will be some new vendors in attendance and that between 30 and 35 are usually present.

Seedy Saturday takes place Saturday, Feb. 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Harris Barn, 4140 Arthur Dr. Admission is by donation.

Last year proceeds from admissions were donated to four school gardens in Ladner and to a B.C. Council of Garden Clubs scholarship fund that helps students studying horticulture.
