Ferries and barges proposed as alternative transport to Lapu-Lapu City

Lapu Lapu City residents may have to take ferries and barges in crossing the Mactan Channel to mainland Cebu.

Department of Public Works and Highways in Central Visayas (DPWH 7) director Ador Canlas said they are considering sea travel as a means to decongest vehicle traffic in the cities of Lapulapu and Mandaue while concreting of D. M. Cortes street and the repair of the old Mandaue Mactan bridge is ongoing.

Canlas invited mayors Jonas Cortes (Mandaue) and Paza Radaza (Lapulapu) to an emergency meeting this morning to discuss possible remedies to the early morning congestion felt in the two bridged cities.

Mayor Cortes told Canlas during their meeting that the Ouano wharf in barangay Looc is a potential take off area for ferries and barges headed for Lapu Lapu City.

Canlas said ferries could dock in Lapulapu City resorts.

He is calling a separate meeting with resort owners on Wednesday to also hear their views on the proposal. Pending the identification of traffic solutions, ongoing works at the old bridge will only be limited to sidewalk repairs, he added.
