MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- A Providence woman, 69, was one of two women killed early Monday by a crash on Route 95 north in East Lyme, according to a Connecticut State Police report.

Numerous 911 calls at 4:28 a.m. reported an accident with injuries just before the ramp at exit 72, the report said. A preliminary investigation indicated that a 1998 Volvo driven by Katerina Barrett, 28, of Greenville, S.C., was passing a tractor-trailer truck from Illinois when it veered right, hit the side of the truck and then struck the Jersey barrier on the left.

The Volvo bounced back into the road and was struck by a 2016 Kia driven by Kenneth Graves, 72, of 9 Lecia Drive, Providence. Barrett was ejected from the Volvo, and the Kia came to an "uncontrolled final rest" in the right shoulder.

The passenger in the Kia, Marie L. Graves, 69, was pronounced dead at the scene.

East Lyme Ambulance took Kenneth Graves and Barrett to Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, where Barrett succumbed, the accident summary said.

Bekzhan Turumkulov, 27, of Chicago, the truck driver, was not injured.

Turumkulov and both occupants of the Kia had been wearing lap and shoulder restraints, but Barrett had not, the report said.

Connecticut state troopers closed the northbound lanes during the emergency response, investigation and cleanup.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call Trooper Daniel L. Hoffner at (860) 848-6500.
