This week, we shine the spotlight on another participant in the Healthy Gaston initiative that has reached the silver level.

Before we share the success of Hagan Kennington Oil Company, here’s a little background on the program.

The Gaston Community Healthcare Commission, part of Gaston Together, created the Healthy Gaston initiative to encourage companies, churches, schools and other organizations to develop wellness programs.

It begins with the bronze leve, where participating groups are recognized for making small changes and beginning a wellness program that helps people see their lives in a different light.

Then comes the silver level, created to honor companies like Hagan Kennington that are backing up that good start with guidelines and policy changes to keep the momentum going.

In the case of Hagan Kennington, the company invited a nutritionist to help employees be more aware of their eating habits so they could make healthier choices.

The company is also encouraging employees to take part in the YMCA Gaston Cup, a series of run and walk races throughout the year.

“By participating in this series, it has gotten a few participants interested and has given them the courage and motivation to participate,” said Michelle Hildreth, the company’s health and safety coordinator.

You can find out more about how your company, church or group could benefit from the Healthy Gaston initiative by calling 704-867-9869. You can also visit the Healthy Gaston Facebook page, where you’ll find great tips on everything from healthy eating to setting fitness goals. You’ll find some homegrown inspiration from the people right here in Gaston County taking charge of their health.

I’ll be back next week to share the success of another group that has reached the silver level.
