Proposed Iowa pork plant faces local vote on transit study

By Chris Scott on 9/28/2015

Officials in Sioux City, Iowa, are expected to vote today on whether to fund a transit study on a proposed pork plant planned by partners Seaboard Foods and Triumph Foods, according to local media reports.

The transit study only requires a single vote to pass unless a member of the City Council asks for a separate roll call, according to a report in the Sioux City Journal. The plant is expected to bring 1,100 jobs to the area and construction was scheduled to begin this fall, although Seaboard officials have yet to announce a date for a groundbreaking ceremony.

When it reaches full capacity in mid-2017, the plant is expected to process 3 million hogs annually for products destined for international, retail, food service and further processing markets.

The proposed traffic study will analyze the impact that an anticipated 300 inbound and outbound trucks per day may have on the local community near the Bridgeport West industrial park. If it wins funding approval, the results of the study are expected sometime in October.

Seaboard officials were unavailable to comment on the traffic study vote or to provide any further information on when the formal groundbreaking might take place.
