Cars, trucks and motorcycles weave in and out of lanes in the national highway of the South Road Properties (SRP). Almost half of the road accidents here every year involve motorbikes.

In light of the spate of road mishaps involving motorcycles in various parts of Cebu City, the (CTTO) reminded the drivers to take extra care and be mindful of traffic rules and regulations.

CTTO chief Rafael Yap told Cebu Daily News the motorists’ failure to abide by traffic rules and regulations is the leading cause of motorcycle accidents in Cebu City.

“We request all motorists to take appropriate measures and exercise caution when driving,” said Yap in a phone interview.

Yap added that motorcycle accidents accounted for the majority of road mishaps that happened in Cebu City daily.

The CTTO has recorded 1,266 road accidents in July alone this year, of which 516 involved motorcycles.

The month of January registered the most number of road accidents with 1,436, of which 557 were motorcycle-related.

Yap reiterated the importance of going back to the most basic rules for safe driving, such as to avoid counter-flowing, driving under the influence of liquor and texting while driving.
