Motorcycle-riding gunmen kill CIDG official in Pasig

Unidentified motorcycle-riding gunmen shot dead early Tuesday a Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) official while refueling at a gasoline station in Pasig City.

Senior Superintendent Orlando Yebra Jr, Pasig City police chief, identified the victim as Chief Inspector Rommel Macatlang, 52, assigned at the CIDG-National Capital Region in Camp Crame.

Yebra said Macatlang, on board a white Mitsubishi Adventure, was refueling at a gas station at the corner of F. Ortigas Jr. and Meralco avenues in Barangay San Antonio when he was shot by two motorcycle-riding gunmen.

The incident happened at 12:30 a.m.

Investigators said Macatlang was supposed to drive home after attending the birthday celebration of Senior Superintendent Belli Tamayo, head of the CIDG-NCR.

The assailants immediately fled after firing several shots at the policeman.

Macatlang was declared dead at the Pasig City General Hospital.

Probers recovered four pieces of fired cartridge cases from an unknown firearm.

Chief Inspector Rodolfo delos Reyes, CIDG-NCR investigation chief, said they will review footage from a CCTV camera installed around the area to have an idea of how the shooting happened.

Delos Reyes also said phone records of the slain cop will be checked for possible leads in the investigation.

He added that they are also checking the cases handled by Macatlang, which may provide them leads on the motive in the policeman's killing.

“Iyong reasons ng kanilang pagkakasuspinde recently for three months ay isa din sa anggulo dahil may na-disbar na abogado doon in a case he’s involved in,” he said. —ALG, GMA News
