Officials in Egypt are investigating a gruesome scene after a bombing and shooting spree at a mosque left well over 200 persons dead and several others injured. According to the most recent accounts, 235 people are reported dead with at least 130 people suffering from various levels of injuries.

BBC.com reports:

Militants have launched a bomb and gun attack on a mosque in Egypt’s North Sinai province, killing 235 people, state media say.

The al-Rawda mosque in the town of Bir al-Abed was targeted during Friday prayers.

It is the deadliest attack of its kind since an Islamist insurgency in the peninsula was stepped up in 2013.

Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi vowed to respond with “brute force” after talks with security officials.

No group has yet claimed the attack, but militants affiliated with so-called Islamic State (IS) have been responsible for scores of deadly attacks in the province.

Egypt’s state-run MENA news agency has reported that several nations, including France, Jordan, and Belarus, have condemned the brutal attack with President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi vowing to respond with “brute force” as the nation continues to grapple with this horrific event.

The outlet adds that the worshippers attacked were of the Sufi sect, which some jihadist groups see as an affront to true Islam.
