Guillermo del Toro's THE SHAPE OF WATER Breaking the Genre Mold and Going for Awards

I know I made a post about how horror films just don't seem to get any 'recognition' for awards (such as the Golden Globes), and yet it wasn't a stab at the awards scene, but an acknowledgement about why genres shouldn't matter. Films do. Good films. But, BOY, does it feel good to hear that the maestro Guillermo del Toro hit the big one with an incredible seven nominations for his true masterpiece, THE SHAPE OF WATER:

Here's the Official Trailer for THE SHAPE OF WATER By Guillermo del Toro

Okay. So it's a film about a merman. But, dear God, it's so much more than that! You can practically taste it and feel the drops of water on your flesh as you watch the trailer.

This particular story is a big deal given the fact that the film has roped in more nominations than even GET OUT. Given I already wrote about that film in the above link, you can imagine -- horror films are getting their due not as a genre, but just as, well, being good.

It's, Therefore, NOT About Them Being Good "Horror" Films. Just Good Films. Period.

We should just do away with genres, actually. Seriously. What's the point? All that should matter is whether or not it's a good film. Not what kind of film it is.

(But let me reiterate just how cool it is that two ACTUAL horror films -- GET OUT and THE SHAPE OF WATER -- have received awards praise. SCORE!)

Given that Netflix really is the master of their own data, how many times a viewer streams The Ridiculous 6, or what films don't get watched all the way straight through, or how many times someone watches an episode of Bill Nye Saves the World, it was easy for them to come up with the list based on just one percentage: 70 percent.
