Where has the rum gone?
Ironworks Distillery is aging barrels of rum on a boat, moored in Lunenburg Harbour – something Lynn MacKay, co-owner of the distillery calls “Lunenburg’s worst kept secret.”
The harbour is usually fairly protected but during last night’s storm surge, the boat’s mooring snapped.
MacKay says thankfully the boat didn’t stray far.
“She sort of whipped her way across the harbour on the waves and on the wind and landed behind the Picton Castle on the little sort of rough rock beach at the government wharf, which is the closest wharf to Ironworks.”
MacKay says they’ll be assessing the damage.
“We’ve got a lot of folks giving us a hand and we’re going to lift it out of the water later today and assess the situation and carry on from there,” says MacKay.
If the rum is salvagable, they hope to get it back out and aging on the water again soon.
MacKay says the process gives the liquor a more “lively” taste.
“Who knows, maybe it will be making Dark and Stormys again soon.”
She says the stormy seas may even give it a little extra flavour.
