Sewickley Twp woman loses $3,000 in gift card scam

A 77-year-old Sewickley Township woman was scammed out of $3,000 in Target gift cards, tricked into thinking she was helping her granddaughter, according to state police in Greensburg.

An unknown person contacted the woman and told her that her granddaughter had been in a car crash.

The suspect told the woman that her granddaughter owed numerous court fees. In order to pay them off, the woman was told to go to a Giant Eagle in Hempfield Township and buy $3,000 in Target gift cards.

The woman did as she was told and send the gift card numbers to the suspect, according to police.
