Roy Burris CPO USN Retired, tells the
attendees how he entered the Navy Reserve.

Chief Burris relates how he came to be in the reserves, "In 1981 I dropped out of NROTC in college then 20 years ago I saw a newspaper advertisement to join the Navy Reserve Advance Pay Grade program. I was able to come in as a DP3 which is an E-4. I was able to travel around the world to Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman and U.A.E. "

Chief Burris continues, "A few years ago my mother asked me if I wouldn't have rather been an Officer like my father. My father piped up and said 'a Chief is more prestigious.'"

Presentation of shadow box

Roy Burris CPO USN Retired, ITC Brig Medina USNR, Walter Roese CPO USN Retired

Roy tells us, "When a sailor retires and is departing the ship for the last time, it's considered bad luck for the sailor's shadow to touch land before he/she does. Thus, the sailor's shipmates would construct a sturdy box, hand-crafted of the finest materials, in which to display mementos of the sailor's accomplishments -- thereby symbolically creating a "shadow" of the sailor. The box safely contains the sailor's "shadow" until he/she is safely ashore"

Roy continued, "My box included challenge coins from my past commands. My first rating badge as a DP3 and my last rating badge ITC with my 20 years of service stripes in Gold."
