The Trump administration has successfully negotiated the re-opening of the United States pork market with Argentina after 25 years. Nebraska Pork Producers Association Executive Director Al Juhnke says it’s positive U.S. negotiators were able to get Argentina to lift its non-scientific trade barriers that had been in place since the early 1990s.
He says Argentina isn’t the only country that’s put in non-scientific trade barriers, there’s also been issues with India and Thailand.
Juhnke’s hoping that now the U.S. can move ahead with the success of the Argentine re opening and get India and Thailand to lift their non-scientific trade restrictions.
The U.S. pork industry which has been the world’s larger exporter of pork over the last ten years, depends on exports for growth. Exports added $50 per head, representing 36-percent of the $140 average value of a U.S. hog marketed in 2016.
