Colin Kaepernick‘s silent protest in 2016 began as a response to the uneven examples of how police of treated people of color in the country, sparking a debate most notably sustained by movements like Black Lives Matter. In support of Kaepernick’s goal and the speculation that NFL teams are refusing to hire the free-agent quarterback, dozens of NYPD officers gathered in New York over the weekend to rally around the former San Francisco 49ers star.

ESPN reports:

The gathering in Brooklyn featured about 75 mostly minority officers wearing black T-shirts reading “#imwithkap.”

One exception was retired officer Frank Serpico, whose exploits were featured in the 1973 film “Serpico.”

He admitted to not being a football fan but said he felt it was important to support Kaepernick for his stance.

“He’s trying to hold up this government, up to our founding fathers,” said Serpico, 81.

Current NYPD officer Sgt. Edwin Raymond organized the rally, according to a New York Times report. City Councilman Jumaane Williams of Brooklyn was among the speakers at the rally in the New York borough he represents.
