Mahershala Ali is enjoying one of the best runs in Hollywood and the small screen for a male actor in some time. The Oscar-winning Bay Area native was rumored to be cast as the lead for HBO’s True Detective for its third season, and Ali has been confirmed to star although the show has not officially received a green light from the network.

Deadline reports:

[HBO President of Programming Casey] Bloys confirmed that Oscar-winning Moonlight actor Mahershala Ali has closed a deal to star in the potential third season of the anthology series. Bloys said he had read five finished scripts. “They are terrific. … I was very impressed and excited,” he said. “We are talking to directors, and when we have a director we want to hire, it will be a go.”

He noted that a third season of True Detective is much further along than a potential second installment of The Night Of.

Bloys made the announcement at this year’s Television Critics Association summer press tour.
