Statue of human rights champion Pepe Diokno unveiled at CHR on Martial Law anniv

The Commission on Human Rights on Thursday unveiled the statue of the late human rights lawyer Jose "Pepe" Diokno, the founding chairman of the country's watchdog agency against rights abuses and violations.

Among those present during the unveiling were former President Benigno Aquino III, Vice President Leni Robredo, Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, and Senators Franklin Drilon and Bam Aquino.

The event coincided with the 45th anniversary of the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos' declaration of Martial Law in 1972. Thousands of human rights violations were allegedly committed during the period of his dictatorship.

The CHR has been under fire recently after it repeatedly sought investigation into the alleged extrajudicial killings blamed on the Duterte administration's war on drugs. —NB, GMA News
