10 Life Hacks To Try If You Favor “Outsiders” with “No Experience”

10 Life Hacks To Try If You Favor “Outsiders” with “No Experience” August 16, 2016

I kind of get it. Many people feel they have no voice in decisions that affect their lives; they’ve been left out of the economy, their values aren’t reflected in the systems in which they must function, and much of the surrounding culture feels utterly foreign to their familiar context. I try to feel empathy for those who have endured a steep, uphill climb for years with nothing to show for it. And I can appreciate the idea that voting for a Presidential candidate who is “an outsider” with “no political experience” feels like a radical indictment of a broken system.

However– I cannot get behind the idea that a billionaire demagogue with a “small hands” complex is going to be the savior of the little guy. Those who have legitimate reason to feel they’ve been “left out” are voting against their own interests. The pandering of a loud-mouth bigot–who has learned to tap into the deepest fears and baser impulses of a certain demographic–is not, ultimately, going to bring about change for the average struggling American.

While I hold a certain measure of grace for those who are voting out of desperation and material need, I have far less patience for privileged Americans who find it folksy and appealing that he’s never held an office, that he has no record of public service, and no work history of…well, actual work.

So if you are a person who finds that appealing, then here are some other things you should try. If you want to eradicate expertise, intellect, training, and education in general from your world…

  1. Let your grandpa fix your brakes. So you’ve missed a few of those regularly scheduled maintenance appointments, and now when you try to slow down–or, heaven forbid, stop your car–well, it makes an alarming grinding sound. NOT TO WORRY, because your grandpa can watch a Youtube video, as good as anybody, and figure out what’s going on in there. You are no dummy–why waste all that money on some bozo who thinks he knows something, just because he went to mechanic’s school?? I don’t think so. Those mechanics have an agenda. You’re not sure what it is, but it’s probably not good. Plus, grandpa really loves those tools, however dubious his eyesight may be these days. Let him at it.
