MUST-SEE VIDEO: Univision Anchor BOOED for Trashing Trump, Speaking Spanish at College Graduation Ceremony

Univision anchor Maria Elena Salinas was booed by several graduating students and their families when she criticized presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and spoke Spanish during a commencement speech on Sunday at the School of Communications at California State University, Fullerton.

After the speech, Salinas retweeted a comment calling her critics “racist white people” and adding her own comment, “That’s not the “America” we want.”

In video of the incident posted by The Washington Post, a woman’s voice can be heard yelling at Salinas to “get off the stage!” at 1:29 in the video.

The booing of Salinas was first reported by graduating student Denise De La Cruz at OC Weekly.

Salinas’ speech was well-received until it became a little too Latino-centric for some and blatantly anti-Trump. The Univision broadcaster began specifically congratulating Latino journalism graduates for what seemed like a large chunk of her speech. She then began speaking in Spanish and asked the crowd to repeat a few inspirational words after her, in Spanish. This left non-journalism grads and non-Latinos/non-Spanish speakers feeling excluded. Parents in the audience and even students in the ceremony began demanding Salinas switch to a more inclusive tone by shouting phrases such as, “What about us?!”

Tensions worsened as Salinas began offering advice to journalism students to use the tools of media to rebut political figures such as Donald Trump. That’s when folks began yelling things to Salinas such as, “Get off the stage!” and “Trash!”

Salinas responded to De La Cruz on Twitter, accusing her critics of “racism”.

@_deedelacruz Thanks, I didn’t hear what they said. But if they complained about me speaking Spanish it’s sad racism is on the rise.

De La Cruz has protected her Twitter account, so her comment to Salinas is unavailable.

Salinas also retweeted a tweet agreeing that those who booed her speech were “racist white people” and “not the “America” we want.”

That’s not the “America” we want RT @_natttycattty: when @MariaESalinas is delivering a beautiful keynote speech at a graduation & racist white people r flipping her off & yelling obscenities

When called out on Twitter by Jake Holzschuh who attended Salinas’ speech, Salinas played the “we
re all immigrants” card.

“@MariaESalinas We were upset that your address was aimed at one ethnicity instead of the the whole class. Had nothing to do with racism”

“Unless you’re Native American we are all from immigrant families…RT @JakeHolzschuh: @MariaESalinas We were … http://tmi.me/1fe7cQ

Two days before her speech Salinas posted a Univision report that attacked Trump and blamed him for a rise in “xenofobia

Salinas also delivered a commencement address earlier on Sunday for the school-wide graduation ceremony at Call Satte Fullerton that apparently did not include the controversies of her later speech.

Salinas posted several photos from the ceremonies at her Instagram account.

Univision posted a report on Salinas’ commencement speeches along with a video excerpt where she makes extended remarks to the audience in Spanish.
