Huzzah! for Tulip Time Base Ball
As another runner crossed the plate, shouts of “Huzzah!” echoed throughout Riverview Park.
A proper cheer for an 1860s Base Ball (yes it was two words then) game at Tulip Time.
The Douglas Dutchers hosted the Chicago Salmon for their annual Tulip Time game.
Fans marveled at the 1860s uniforms, ball, rules and most of all, not seeing a single glove.
There were no gloves in the 1860s making plays at the bases especially interesting. Balls can be caught on one bound as an out.
Pitchers threw underhand and are instructed by the umpire to throw where the striker wants the ball pitched.
That means a lot of action on the base paths and a lot of hitting.
There was plenty for the cranks (fans) to cheer about as both clubs reached double figures in scoring, thoroughly entertaining the wide-eyed crowd of all ages.
