School and church leaders broke ground on the site of a new Catholic school in Meridian today.

St. Ignatius will open for the 2017-2018 school year next to the Holy Apostles Catholic Church near the corner of Meridian Road and Chinden Blvd.

School committee members say the school will be 56,000 square feet and include classes from Pre-K to 8th grade, enrolling 470 students.

The project will cost $10.5 million and so far $9 million have been raised through the parish.

A parent whose children will be attending the school says the Holy Apostles community has been generous in their giving.

“We've had a lot of community events where they are coming out and donating their time as well their money, and it’s really given this project the boost it needs to get off the ground,” said Brittany Brady.

School leaders say they are working with Bishop Kelly high School as a place where their students can continue their education.
