A minor girl, trafficked from Jalpaiguri in West Bengal and rescued from a Gurgaon home last year, has been given Rs 1.5 lakh following an order from the Child Welfare Committee (CWC). The CWC order states that the money given to the girl, still living in a city-based child welfare home, was the wage she was to receive as a help at the household where she was placed by a placement agency.

The victim was among several girls brought to Delhi by her maternal uncle. They were then taken to Gurgaon, the girl had said in her complaint. She was taken to a placement agency, which placed her in a household as a help.

According to the victim, she was molested and physically assaulted by her employer. The girl managed to escape, only to be beaten up by another employer, a woman, she stated in her complaint. A neighbour intervened and called the police control room.

On September 4 last year, the girl was rescued by the childline run by Shakti Vahini and police and a case was registered against the placement agency as well as her employers.

When the girl was sent to a shelter home in Gurgaon, a man had appeared in court and sought custody of her by submitting some documents. “The CWC, unsatisfied with the documents, directed the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit in Gurgaon to look into the matter and verify the documents submitted by the person with the help of police. Moreover, the committee also wrote to the Commissioner of Police, Gurgaon, to speed up the investigation in the case as well as take legal action against the placement agency, where the girl worked for 18 months, and also help the child in recovering her wages,” Shakuntala Dhull, chairperson, CWC (Gurgaon), said.
