ST. PAUL, Minn. - As the Older Americans Act celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, legislation to again reauthorize the act is being considered in Congress.

U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., among the co-sponsors of the reauthorization measure, Senate Bill 192, said the act supports about one in five older adults through a number of key nutrition and social services, helping them remain independent in their homes and communities.

"From Meals on Wheels to getting help with legal services, long-term care. By 2030, nearly one in four Minnesotans will be 65 or older," she said. "So that's why it becomes more important so people can stay in their homes and get services there because that's what they would rather do and it's less expensive."

Klobuchar said the act also supports programs to crack down on financial fraud and elder abuse, while providing assistance to family caregivers. She said the act hasn't been updated in nearly a decade.

"This reathorization, which went through the committee on a bipartisan basis, has some new things in it that adjust to the times because the same bill has been in existence for a while," she said. "So they made some tweaks and changes, and that's why we'd really like to see it on the Senate floor by the end of the year."

The current authorization of the Older Americans Act expired in fiscal year 2011.

Details of S.192 are online at congress.gov.
