TAUNTON, Mass. (AP) — An Attleboro man has been held on $1 million bail after pleading not guilty in the hit-and-run death of a popular Seekonk town official last winter.

Jacob LaCourse was arraigned Monday on charges including leaving the scene of a deadly motor vehicle accident in connection with the Jan. 30 death of 51-year-old Karen McHugh.

Authorities say the 24-year-old LaCourse was delivering pizza when he struck McHugh, the assistant town clerk.

Prosecutors say they got their break last week when LaCourse's father told police he thought his son might be involved. Police also connected the younger LaCourse to the scene of McHugh's death via a GPS device he was wearing after pleading not guilty to rape.

LaCourse's lawyer says his client "has great sympathy for the family of the victim."
