BRANCH COUNTY — Substance abuse issues are quickly escalating, not only in Branch County but throughout the world, and it is a huge problem for all involved. Many believe that instead of locking such offenders behind bars, they would be best helped by doctors and counselors at a rehabilitation facility.

That exact thought drove Randy Leviton of Damascus Road Ministries in Coldwater to creating Freedom Recovery Center, located at 62 Division St.

According to Leviton, the center will offer 60- to 90-day intense inpatient treatment by way of a 10-bed facility, with patients being monitored by local health care professionals, including Dr. Richard Tackett, registered nurse Luanne Osborne, substance abuse counselor Jennifer Hunter and Dr. Mehalai Arivoli.

An outpatient program, through Damascus, will also be provided, with a focus on treatment, relapse prevention, individual and group therapy, alcohol highway safety education, intervention and more.

"You do not have to be a Christian to seek help from Freedom Recovery or Damascus," Leviton said. "We will help anyone in need, but if they want to know about Jesus Christ, we will teach them."

All involved in the programs are provided the opportunity to seek employment through job placement companies in the area, transportation and temporary housing in the community.

Currently, the program is only accepting male patients, with Damascus assisting both male, female and families.

"We are in the process of securing a location to build a larger facility, where we can assist all," Leviton said. "If we can't help you, we will find someone who can."
