GARDNER - They may be small-scale, but radio-controlled jet turbine models pack a full-sized punch. Next weekend Gardner Municipal Airport will again play host to the 10th Annual New England Jet Rally.

Forty pilots are expected to take part in the event from across New England and as far away as Quebec City.

At a preview flight demonstration held Saturday, event director Jeff Lynds prepared and flew his Massachusetts International Guard F15 model. The models all contain real jet engines fueled by kerosene and include the same parts as a full-scale plane.

That particular model was constructed by Mr. Lynds, who has been flying this type of model jet for 20 years.

“The idea is to have the model resemble the full-scale version as closely as possible. Mine has all the same markings and letterings as the original, hand-painted with automotive paint,” Mr. Lynds said.

The appearance of the models to their originals is not the only similarity. The jet turbine models can reach speeds up to 200 mph and are extremely loud.

Mike Turocy, who partners with Mr. Lynds in directing the rally, was also present to explain the procedures associated with flying the jets. Mr. Turocy pilots jet turbine models and has flown full-scale planes for 28 years.

“To fly one of these, you have to have a turbine waiver and prove that you’re proficient. We have a lot of safety precautions in place. We send out notices to local police to let them know that model aircraft will be flying in the area. Every pilot has what we call a spotter, who stands with him and is an extra pair of eyes to make sure everything goes smoothly. We are not just hobbyists, we are professionals,” Mr. Turocy stated.

All of the pilots who will be demonstrating next weekend will adhere to the safety standards set forth by the Academy of Model Aeronautics.

The event is billed as a family-friendly affair and has been especially popular with children in past years. The rally will include a refreshment stand, T-shirts and souvenirs, and raffles.

Karen Adrian, who assists in organizing the event, was enthusiastic about the community aspect of the show.

“We try to keep it local to support and promote local organizations. The food will be provided by the Templeton Lions Club. Our event has really made a name for itself in this community. Starting in July we get calls from spectators asking for more information,” she said.

The rally will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 15 and 16. Admission to the rally is $2 or $5 per carload. Parking at the airport, located at 499 Airport Road, is free.
