Student-Athletes Protection Bill now a law

The fight of Senator Pia Cayetano to free student-athletes from unjust rules continued yesterday as she announced the passage of Republic Act 10676.

Cayetano posted on her Twitter account that the Student-Athletes Protection Bill has been officially turned into a law after the President, Benigno Aquino III, signed it yesterday.

“Happy to announce that UAAP residency issue will now be put to rest with the passage of RA 10676 signed by the Pres yesterday,” the outspoken politician/sportswoman announced.

The development is set to make things even more interesting for the UAAP, which refused to implement the said law this season, thus disqualifying Ateneo guard Hubert Cani from suiting up for the Ateneo Blue Eagles in Season 78 which is set to open on Sept. 5.

The UAAP reasoned that Cani’s transfer from National University to Ateneo in 2014, happened when the league’s two-year residency rule for high school student-athletes transferring from one member school to another was still in effect.
