The Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles showed the stuff  defending champions are made of, keeping their unbeaten record intact with a 73-48 manhandling of the University of San Carlos (USC) Baby Warriors yesterday in the secondary division of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Magis Eagles remained unbeaten after seven games,  while the Baby Warriors suffered their second loss in six outings.

Spearheading the 25-point lead was Jed Cedrick Colonia, who piled up 21 points, 11 coming in the fourth period. The Catmon-native also added five rebounds, four steals and two assists.

Andrew Velasco backed Colonia with 16 points while Erol Pastor added 12 markers.

Aljie Mendez paced the Baby Warriors with 12 points.

The Magis Eagles took off to a 7-0 start as they hounded the Baby Warriors with their stingy defense resulting in several of their opponents’ miscues.

Ahead by seven at the start of the second period, Colonia ignited a 21-10 run for the Magis Eagles, who posted a fat 30-14 lead at the turn.

The Baby Warriors staged a mini-run, cutting the deficit to just nine, 31-40, but the Magis Eagles restored their advantage by uncorking a 7-0 attack to stretch the lead back to 16, 49-33.

The Baby Warriors made one final push by starting payoff period with six unanswered points but the Magis Eagles shut the door on them with an 11-2 tear.

In the other secondary division games, the University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Green Lancers leaned on the gigantic performance of Jancorl Cabahug to repulse the Cebu Eastern College (CEC) Dragons, 79-74, while the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Baby Wildcats trampled the Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) Greywolves, 61-42.

Jancork Cabahug carried the Baby Lancers on his shoulders by scattering a whopping 44 points, while also hauling down 22 rebounds, issuing two assists and collecting three steals.

Marion Abinuman, on the other hand, led CIT-U’s victory with 19 points.
