NYU student says forced to work as dominatrix to pay tuition
and you won’t believe what one professor has to do.
New York University is expanding, and a coalition of groups are opposing the expansion. Some due to community concerns, some due to concerns over the cost of NYU tuition, room and board.
The protest was descibed in NYU Local:
Yesterday, a rally organized by Faculty Against the Sexton Plan (FASP) drew a crowd of over 200 people in Washington Square Park to protest the NYU 2031 expansion plan.
The rally featured voices not only from FASP, but also support from the Student & Labor Action Movement, NYU Divest, the Roosevelt Institute, New York State United Teachers, Students for Justice in Palestine, Long Island University, Cooper Union, and a variety of other students and community members. The event also featured a performance by the theatrical percussion group STOMP.
After the airing of grievances, NYU Local noted:
Several NYU students shared personal narratives relating the burden of NYU’s financial obligations. These stories related how the high cost of NYU’s tuition has robbed students of normalcy.
One student, wearing a mask and identifying herself only as “Mandy,” described how she was forced into prostitution to pay her rent and tuition bills.

The Observer further described:
Calling NYU’s financial practices “grotesque,” [professor Mark Crispin] Miller then introduced a student facing challenges as a result of her unceasing debt burden. The woman, who chose to maintain her anonymity by wearing a mask, called herself “Mandy.” In an impassioned speech, Mandy described her time working as a dominatrix, a position she felt forced into as a way to afford tuition. “I became desperate,” she told the crowd.
With the popularity of websites like Seeking Arrangement, particularly among New York City college students, Mandy’s sobering statements become easy to accept. “Student prostitution is not a rarity. Many of you know someone who has worked as a dominatrix, a masseuse, a stripper or an escort,” she concluded. “It is an epidemic.”
That’s not the worst of the suffering at NYU. It gets worse. Much worse.

I don’t think it’s legal to force another person into prostitution. She needs to go to the police, and report the person forcing her to be a prostitute.
Was it the president of NYU?
I’m sure her degree in Liberal Arts will be worth every second she was on her back.
I wouldn’t expect she spent much time on her back.
The tuition at NYU is higher than at other colleges.
And maybe if you don’t have special resources, a person shouldn’t go there, at least till this changes.

That said, tuition and other expense (ex. room & board) cost increases are way out of control (this is as of 2012; no doubt it’s higher now).
Grotesque is indeed an apt descriptor.
I still remember the shame and degradation of being forced–FORCED–to work as a janitor to pay for school. Oh, wait, that isn’t very sexy or controversial. Okay, so maybe I was forced to be something more interesting–a drug mule or a three-card monte dealer or a procurer of purloined internal organs.
Nope, I was a janitor. Oh well.
I know the shame: I was forced to bag groceries for tips only. Over $20 was a great day, back in the day.
Have a friend who earned three masters degrees and one PhD doing janitorial work.
I was forced to work at a pizza place, and worse, forced to eat a free pizza almost every day. On the other hand, I understand the frustration–my son’s undergraduate engineering degree at a private university cost me about a quarter million dollars.

I can’t help wondering what her major was.
If prostitution is the limit of Mandy’s capabilities now & Mandy is not hired by a University after graduation; her time currently spent as a prostitute should be considered an apprenticeship.

PLENTY of great schools for much less.
No one is “forced” to go to college…well, maybe kids of Asian and Jewish parents…to fit a stereotype.
But in reality, it is a choice.
We haven’t gotten quite to “from each according to their abilities to each according to their needs” yet, with the government deciding what your abilities are … and then which hive you will belong to after that.
Yet.
And I’m guessing she’s not majoring in any STEM (Science, Engineering, Technology and Math for those unfamiliar with the term) but probably some wuss-ass Soft Science or worse.

Yes, that’s EXACTLY the stereotype he was talking about. It does put pressure on students of those backgrounds (which I’ve seen firsthand).

Well if Universities would focus on hiring people who would teach things like physics, engineering, biology, chemistry, math, business, practicing law ( as opposed to social justice law )
instead of guys who are experts at media studies who write books on how Bush stole elections, maybe college would not be that expensive.
In a just world these people would starve to death. In our world we are forced to feed them. That is the only force involved here.

Lemme see, what was my college life like? I spent 11 years in night school, taking as little as one class at a time, so that I could pay my way through each semester. It was a tremendous financial burden on my then-young family.
Oh, yeah…I also:
1) Served in the military (including Desert Shield and Desert Storm)
2) Held a full-time job
3) Did odd jobs around the neighborhood for extra cash
4) Packed my lunch, and almost never ate out
5) Had two kids
6) Moved three times, as my family grew
7) Coached my son’s T-ball team
8) Coached my daughter’s soccer team
I guess I just sorta got on with my life like an adult, and didn’t take time to whine about it.
These people are not the future; they’re a side show act.
What ever happened to Co-operative education departments where students worked (at legitimate jobs) alternating semesters to build a resume’ and work experience while going to school?
Some state schools give better education than some private schools. Our daughter much preferred UGA to Emory in her field (which saved us mucho money). She ended up Phi Beta Kappa with a scholarship to law school.
As one of our nephews said, “No bachelors’s degree with worth a quarter million – save your money for grad school – and if you work really hard, you may get a scholarship to grad or medical school.” (Like Son-in-Law did).
PS – The young woman in question doesn’t have much self/other respect or fear of G-D to be willing to engage in such activities.
This kind of thinking is the result of the p-rnification of the media and society.
Dems would prefer to make taxpayers work as prostitutes so they could pay her tuition, fees, and living expenses.
Or just forced labor or extra taxation.
