A Massachusetts high school is investigating reports of taunting and use of a racial slur at a girls soccer game held on Friday.

Fans of the Amherst (Mass.) Regional High School girls soccer team allegedly directed taunts, which included a racial slur, at the Holyoke High School team. According to WGGB/WSHM, many of the taunts were directed at the Holyoke goalie, who is of mixed ethnicity.

According to MassLive.com, the incident grabbed attention on Facebook, including a post Saturday morning from Holyoke City Counselor at Large James M. Leahy.

“First, I want to congratulate the Holyoke Lady Knights on a tough loss last night verse Amherst,” the post began. “Secondly, you will forgive me if this comes off as terse, I want to say I’m appalled and shocked at the behavior of players, parents and spectators at last night’s varsity soccer game. Their racial comments and threats of violence to our players and fans was nothing short of disgusting. “

The central office in Amherst emailed this statement from Mark Jackson, Amherst Regional High School principal:

“Over the weekend, the superintendent of the Holyoke public schools and the principal of Holyoke High School reached out to acting Superintendent Mike Morris and myself. Their concern was the behavior of the ARHS fans during our girls soccer game against Holyoke High School on Friday, Sept. 23.

“They allege that ARHS fans harassed the Holyoke players throughout the game. If substantiated, behavior of this sort would be covered by our code of conduct.

“This morning, I spoke to the Holyoke High School principal. I assured him that we will take these allegations seriously and investigate each thoroughly.”

Amherst defeated Holyoke in the match, 2-1.
