An easy, instant upgrade

Wainscoting can instantly transform a room, as the process of partially paneling a wall adds a sense of elegance without a complete overhaul. With the wide variety of styles to choose from, you can find something to match every kind of home, whether it be traditional or modern.

“Hardwood wainscoting is popular for its beauty, strength and durability,” said Charles Combs, owner of AIC Millworks at 4624 Eagle Falls Place in Tampa. “Designs may incorporate a sophisticated, Victorian-era raised panel or a more casual recessed panel.”

Preparation is key when installing.

“The installation of wainscoting can be broken down into three basic segments, each of which gets progressively easier: preparation, assembly and trim finishing,” Combs said.

Make sure that the bottom rail is level across the entire room. Insert the stiles and panels in a clockwise direction around the room, and fasten the end stiles. The intermediate stiles should be allowed to float freely.

“We recommend the use of screws in the top rail and bottom rail, as they allow one to adjust the millwork to accommodate irregularities along the wall,” Combs said. “You can save yourself needless touch-up work by positioning the screws along the perimeter of the railing and concealing them with the wainscoting cap and shoe molding.”
