Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS) remains the gold standard of education for emergency medical assessment and treatment. Endorsed by the National Association of EMS Physicians, AMLS emphasizes the use of the AMLS Assessment Pathway, a systematic tool for assessing and managing common medical conditions with urgent accuracy.

In the third edition of AMLS, students learn to recognize and manage common medical crises through realistic case-based scenarios that challenge students to apply their knowledge to highly critical patients. The course emphasizes the use of scene size-up, first impression, history, interactive group discussion on differential diagnosis and potential treatment strategies, and physical exam to systematically rule out and consider possibilities and probabilities in treating patients’ medical crises. The third edition AMLS library of patient simulations offers students an opportunity to apply critical thinking skills to a variety of patient presentations. Additional features include patient simulation monitor images and ECGs provided by iSimulate, to enhance students’ experience.

Mayday, Mayday, Mayday. Whether lost, trapped, or low on air, too often these dangers to late. Increasing firefighter’s ability to recognize impending danger and take proactive steps in their own rescue is paramount to fire ground safety. But what happens when a mayday is needed after the call, in the station, or at home? How do we call a mayday then? In the case of behavioral health injuries knowing when to call a mayday can be even more difficult to recognize. Often strategy and tactics applied in addressing mental health issues are dependent on the person receiving the request for assistance. In the Mental Mayday, we look at a real-life Mental Mayday from the perspective of the firefighter in danger and did not know how to call for help. We introduce students to the concept of using fire ground terminology and tactics to address The Mental Mayday and address key elements and obstacles that prevent us from calling for help.

Mayday, Mayday, Mayday. A phrase no officer wants to hear. Whether lost, trapped, or low on air, too often these dangers are recognized late. But what happens when a mayday is needed after the call, in the station, or at home? How do we call a mayday then? In the case of mental health injuries, when to call a mayday can be even harder to recognize. Mayday, Mayday, Mayday. A phrase no incident commander wants to hear. Whether lost, trapped, or low on air, too often these dangers are recognized late. Firefighter’s, company officers’, and incident commanders’ work tirelessly to recognize the warning signs of impending danger and take proactive steps to prevent a mayday situation. But what happens when a mayday comes after the call, in the station, or at home? How do we call a mayday then? In the case of behavioral health maydays, recognizing when to call a mayday can be even more difficult. Often the strategies applied to the rescue can be inconsistent and depend heavily on closest person to the Mayday. In Commanding the Mental Mayday: An Incident Command Style Approach To Addressing Behavioral Health Injuries. We review a real-life Mental Mayday from the perspective of the firefighter who lived through it. We evaluate the causes in missing the warning signs and delay in calling the mayday. Participants review how core principles of incident command systems can improve the quality and consistency of support provided to our members from the perspective of a command officer. Utilizing fire ground tactics and strategies common on the fire ground, we can ensure proper resource deployment, reduction of reflex time, proper accountability, and rapid rescue of firefighters in need of support.

Human trafficking may sound more like a plot in a movie than something that is happening in our own communities. Human trafficking occurs when force, fraud, or coercion is used to control another person for the purpose of engaging in forced labor or commercial sexual exploitation. Police, Fire, EMS and medical personnel may come into contact with these people through the course of their duties. Do you know what you would do and how you identify this potential victim?
