3 face masks with special features that promise to kill viruses

With COVID-19 still surging in the Philippines, more and more people are looking for more and more way to protect themselves.

There is a whole kahuna of things we can and have been doing — wearing of face shields, sterilization, disinfection — but often, we go back to basics: staying home, social distancing, washing of hands more frequently, and wearing correct fast masks correctly (over the nose, over the chin, please).

Thankfully, more face masks promising better protection are entering the market as well. Apart from reusable — which is great for the environment — they also feature impressive technology that not only promises to protect the wearer from viruses (including the coronavirus) but promises to kill viruses too.

Below, we found three new ones.

1. Fine Guard

The newest kid on the block uses Swiss technology that's been "clinically proven to immediately neutralise and kill viruses and germs on contact," its press statement read.

The Swiss tech, called Livinguard, not only sterilizes the air that passes through the mask, its charged ions also disrupt the atomic structure of a virus/bacteria, rendering them "inactive."

Before anybody says it's a little too good to be true: the Livinguard tech was tested at the University of Arizona under the supervision of Environmental Microbiologist Dr. Charles Gerba and was proven to kill 99.99% of the coronavirus on contact. Another research was conducted at the Berlin University and the University Aachen and it said Livinguard does kill COVID-19.

The mask is reusable for up to a year, and are guaranteed to eliminate bacteria for up to 30 washes.

Fine Guard has two variants: Comfort Masks (P995) and N95 (P1495). Available in Rustans, True Value, and Afpces.

2. Aerian Essentials

Designed by famed Filipino creative Albert Andrada, the Aerian mask features a special nanosilver filter that promises to kill bacteria and viruses.

Developed by world-renowned chemist Dr. Liu Hongjun, the nanosilver was first used in purifying water, It is positively charged so when it comes into contact with negatively charged particles — like bacteria and viruses — the interaction between the instantly destroys the negatively charged particles.

With three layers — an exterior which blocks particles, the patented nanosilver layer, and an interior layer for longevity — it is able to provide anti-microbial, anti-fungi, and anti-viral protection.

The Aerian mask comes in three variants: Classic (P299), Premium (P799) and Luxewear (P1999). Available online

3. Copper Mask

Apart from promising to kill 99.9% of germs, Copper Mask is becoming pretty popular because it also helps prevent dermatitis and allergies.

It has an antimicrobial film that features strands of copper, which we know by now, has natural anti bacterial properties. Its surface prevents penetration of moisture and because of its design, it allows unobstructed breathing, less skin irritation, and less condensation in eyeglasses.

The Copper Mask is washable and reusable for 30 days. P350. Available online.
