SXSW 2023

Designing Meetings for Co-Responsibility

Description:

Meetings are precious time - it's where we (1) feel connected (2) develop ideas and (3) make decisions. Yet, typical workplace meetings fail to create an environment that optimizes the time for those objectives, missing huge opportunities for team cohesion and broader input for better decisions every meeting, every day.

For a sense of connection as well as a safe space to develop ideas, psychological safety and worker voice are essential. Decision-making requires a transparent, clear and inclusive decision-making format. This session introduces basic meeting planning concepts, clear group decision-making with consent, and turn-taking patterns in rounds - let's together raise the bar on meetings with learnable skills with actionable practices, and they improve meetings instantly.

Takeaways

  1. We can make sure everyone is heard by speaking one-by-one. (And it doesn't have to take a long time.)
  2. We can make decisions using the consent principle: a decision passes when there is no objection. Biased toward action, yet considerate of objections.
  3. Consciousness of desired outcomes in meeting planning: each agenda items either needs to serve information sharing, shared exploration or a decision.
