• Mrs. Nickel was a wonderful teacher and was the reason I chose further studies in textiles. I loved her class and listening to her talk about life. After they retired from BH, she and my mum (Kay Condra) remained great chums, meeting regularly for their BH teachers lunch! I'm so sad to hear of her passing and send my condolences to her family. • Jo and I were both art teachers at Balmoral Hall. Her infectious smile was always uplifting and her love of art and embroidery was inspirational. I cherish the works I have that were created by her as well as Ludwig. I have many fond memories of their friendship. • Mrs. Nickel taught Fabric Arts/Design Arts at BH. The memories of those classes are some of the best parts of my school years. I learned stitches, and colour balance, but also to continue working at projects that felt hard. • I am so saddened to hear of Jo's passing. She was always so put together; from her outfits to her finger nail polish and never a hair out of place! I very much enjoyed hearing about her past and learning about how things were back in her day. She always talked very highly of her family. Her love and pride for her children and grandchildren was truly evident. I will forever cherish our appointments together at the dental office and feel so blessed to have met such a wonderful lady. • Although my mother has passed away now, her and Jo were very connected through the WEG as founding members. My sister Merrill and I had an opportunity to meet Jo again (and her family) at the WEG event in 2019. • When I joined the Winnipeg Embroiderers' Guild in 2009, I was privileged to get to know Jo. Not knowing anyone there when I started, I was shy and Jo was always there to encourage me. In latter years she would remind me of how quiet I was when I first joined and how I had come out of my shell and grown in the guild. She was such a warm, caring person and made everyone she came in contact with feel very special! • My mom Shirley Tyderkie was a dear friend of Jo’s through the embroider’s guild and she spoke of her often. Their Tuesday group was something very special to my mom and something she always looked forward to. I also met Susan many years ago and provided flute music at their wonderful celebration. • Jo was a member of the Winnipeg Embroiderers' Guild from its inception and was a mentor to many of us. She was a good friend of my mother's Pat Etsell and we had many good times together and lots of laughs. Jo taught me a lot in my journey of needlework. We often went to the Tea Rooms, for lunch and on retreat and we always had a great time with Jo. She was a very kind, courageous and wise woman and I am so grateful to have known her. She was a believer and we had many great conversations about our faith. She has completed her journey home now and I know she will be waiting to see us at the end of our journey. • Jo was part of the Tuesday ladies for many years ... a gathering of artists who learned much under her leadership. They spent many hours quilting, knitting, tatting, doing embroidery, and learning together. I know that Shirley, Joan, Margie, Joyce, Una and Miriam enjoyed her company and wisdom.
