MARGARET ELIZABETH JOSEPHINE HEWITT-NICKEL

On December 8, 2022, Margaret Elizabeth Josephine Hewitt-Nickel, "Jo" passed away.
She is survived by her daughter Susan (Brian); grandchildren, Aidan (Ashlynn), Luke (Taiwo); her son Gary (Helga); grandchildren, Emma and Sophie. Also recognized is her friend and support for many years, Shideh Korasheh, who was like an adopted daughter.
In 1958 she left Northern Ireland with her first husband, Fred, and their children. She left her loving family whom she remained very close to throughout her life.
July 22, 1978, Jo married her soul mate Ludwig Nickel, who after what was too brief a time, passed away on January 21, 1989.
Jo was a kind, generous, loving person, who touched the lives of many people in a remarkable way over many years. Her years teaching art at Balmoral Hall School, especially her students and peers, many of who remained in her life, were very special to her. Her skill and willingness to share with others assured her an important part of the Winnipeg Embroiderers' Guild over a lifetime.
A private gathering of her family will be held to celebrate her life.

Condolences & Memories (14 entries)

  • Mrs. Nickel was a wonderful teacher and was the reason I chose further studies in textiles. I loved her class and listening to her talk about life. After they retired from BH, she and my mum (Kay Condra) remained great chums, meeting regularly for their BH teachers lunch! I'm so sad to hear of her passing and send my condolences to her family. She was a super special and classy lady! - Posted by: Jill Condra (friend and ex student) on: Dec 14, 2022

  • I am very sorry to hear of the passing of Mrs Hewitt-Nickel. She was a wonderful person. Although I was not fortunate to have been one of her students, she was always happy to see and talk to me—my condolences to her family. - Posted by: Heather Ragot (Former BH student (Hinchliffe '81)) on: Dec 13, 2022

  • Jo and I were both art teachers at Balmoral Hall. Her infectious smile was always uplifting and her love of art and embroidery was inspirational. I cherish the works I have that were created by her as well as Ludwig. I have many fond memories of their friendship. My condolences to Susan, Gary and their families as well as Shideh. - Posted by: Laura Chandler (longtime friend and colleague) on: Dec 13, 2022

  • Mrs. Nickel taught Fabric Arts/Design Arts at BH. The memories of those classes are some of the best parts of my school years. I learned stitches, and colour balance, but also to continue working at projects that felt hard. Mrs. Nickel gave a listening ear, and space in a stressful world. - Posted by: Mary-Beth Barker (Former student) on: Dec 12, 2022

  • I am so saddened to hear of Jo's passing. She was always so put together; from her outfits to her finger nail polish and never a hair out of place! I very much enjoyed hearing about her past and learning about how things were back in her day. She always talked very highly of her family. Her love and pride for her children and grandchildren was truly evident. I will forever cherish our appointments together at the dental office and feel so blessed to have met such a wonderful lady. Jo, may you rest easy. I'll miss you greatly. Thank you for everything. xo - Posted by: Holly T (Friend) on: Dec 12, 2022

  • Although my mother has passed away now, her and Jo were very connected through the WEG as founding members. My sister Merrill and I had an opportunity to meet Jo again (and her family) at the WEG event in 2019. We offer our condolences to the family on the passing of this remarkable woman. - Posted by: Diane Trenholm (Daughter of Shirley Tyderkie) on: Dec 11, 2022

  • When I joined the local embroidery guild Jo was so very kind and welcoming to me. She always stopped to say a kind word every time I saw her. A very classy lady, she stood out from the crowd. I will miss her. - Posted by: Charlotte Cels (Friend) on: Dec 11, 2022

  • When I joined the Winnipeg Embroiderers' Guild in 2009, I was privileged to get to know Jo. Not knowing anyone there when I started, I was shy and Jo was always there to encourage me. In latter years she would remind me of how quiet I was when I first joined and how I had come out of my shell and grown in the guild. She was such a warm, caring person and made everyone she came in contact with feel very special! Heaven now has another beautiful soul! - Posted by: Helen Bartel (friend, member of WEG) on: Dec 11, 2022

  • My mom Shirley Tyderkie was a dear friend of Jo’s through the embroider’s guild and she spoke of her often. Their Tuesday group was something very special to my mom and something she always looked forward to. I also met Susan many years ago and provided flute music at their wonderful celebration. I am so sorry to hear of Jo’s passing. They were a ladies group like no other. - Posted by: Merrill Clark (Friend) on: Dec 11, 2022

  • Jo was a wonderful, warm and caring neighbour, the first to welcome me to my new home across the hall in the Condo many years ago. I have special memories of our regular visits and many examples of her artistry. Sincere condolences to Jo’s family and friends. She will be missed - Posted by: Barbara Main (Friend and neighbour) on: Dec 10, 2022

  • Jo was a member of the Winnipeg Embroiderers' Guild from its inception and was a mentor to many of us. She was a good friend of my mother's Pat Etsell and we had many good times together and lots of laughs. Jo taught me a lot in my journey of needlework. We often went to the Tea Rooms, for lunch and on retreat and we always had a great time with Jo. She was a very kind, courageous and wise woman and I am so grateful to have known her. She was a believer and we had many great conversations about our faith. She has completed her journey home now and I know she will be waiting to see us at the end of our journey. Jo, I miss you greatly. Sharon Etsell - Posted by: Sharon Etsell (Friend) on: Dec 10, 2022

  • Jo was part of the Tuesday ladies for many years ... a gathering of artists who learned much under her leadership. They spent many hours quilting, knitting, tatting, doing embroidery, and learning together. I know that Shirley, Joan, Margie, Joyce, Una and Miriam enjoyed her company and wisdom. That time together was special for all of them and legendary in our family. Sincere sympathy to all of you on her passing. - Posted by: Jane Sellers Anema (friend ) on: Dec 10, 2022
