GEORGE TOWN: China Southern Airlines today officially increased the number of direct flights from Penang to Guangzhou to two flights daily to cater to the increasing number of travellers.
Previously, the airline had been operating single flights for both ways since the start of its direct route from Penang to Guangzhou in 1991.
China Southern Airlines Company (Penang) general manager Liu Zhen Hua said in total there would be 14 flights every week.
"The next three months will be the peak season as Chinese tourists are expected to flock into the country," he said during the ceremony to announce the increase in flights at the Penang International Airport.
Liu said each flight was estimated to carry about 160 passengers, which is what led the company to increase the frequency of flights.
The fare for a direct flight starts from RM800, and is expected to increase to RM1,000 in the following months with return trips included.
Also present were state Tourism exco Yeoh Soon Hin and Teh Lai Heng, the political-secretary to Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
